These tasks include creating database objects like tables, indexes and views, and loading data into the database with Db2 utilities like LOAD and INGEST. Various diagnostic methods will be presented, including using db2pd command options, and monitoring with SQL statements that reference Db2 monitor functions. Students will learn how to implement automatic archival for database logs and how to recover a database to a specific point in time using the archived logs. The course covers using EXPLAIN tools to review the access plans for SQL statements and adding indexes to improve SQL performance. This course is designed from a user’s perspective. The students are not required to have any prior knowledge of AIX or any other UNIX-based system. The course units have been designed in a logical order to enable the novice user to identify the major components of AIX. The students are introduced to the operating system by logging in and out of the system and carrying out a few basic operations. The hierarchical tree structure is explained in detail, as well as functions that can be carried out on files and directories. The concept of a shell is introduced and the operations that are supported through it. The one editor that is covered is vi, as it is available on most UNIX platforms. The first module is IBM BigInsights Overview and it will give you an overview of IBM’s big data strategy as well as a why it is important to understand and use big data. The second module is IBM Open Platform with Apache Hadoop. The Open Data Platform initiative (ODP) is a shared industry effort focused on promoting and advancing the state of Apache Hadoop and Big Data technologies for the enterprise. The ODP Core will take the guesswork out of the process and accelerate many use cases by running on a common platform. It allows enterprises to focus on building business driven applications.

This module provides an in-depth introduction to the main components of the ODP core –namely Apache Hadoop (inclusive of HDFS, YARN, and MapReduce) and Apache Ambari — as well as providing a treatment of the main open-source components that are generally made available with the ODP core in a production Hadoop cluster.
